Alternative Medicine
A lot of people are frustrated with the options available to them in mainstream medicine these days. Often when we go to the doctor with a physical problem, the only answer we get is a prescription for some kind of medicine that is supposed to cure what ails us. The problem with this approach is that it deals with the symptoms of the problem, rather than the disease itself. It’s only when we can get to the root of the problem that we will be able to solve it once-and-for-all. That is what holistic health and alternative medicine are all about. It’s about getting in touch with your body and learning how to cure yourself through the body’s own natural healing mechanisms.
Types of Alternative Medicine
There are several varieties of internal medicine that should be discussed, and all of them have merit:
Homeopathy:
This involves the treatment of patients using highly diluted preparations that will lead to healthy people displaying symptoms similar to those displayed by someone who is sick. The fundamental principle guiding homeopathy is “let like be cured by like,” or the law of similars. Apart from examining symptoms, homeopathic practitioners focus on a person’s physical and psychological state and a remedy is chosen based on the totality of symptoms displayed.
Acupuncture:
Acupuncture is another form of alternative medicine that involves treatment of illnesses through the insertion of needles at certain points on the body. These acupuncture points are located along the body’s meridians, which are channels that guide the the flow of life energy, known as qi. Acupuncturists believe the manipulation of the needles can help to treat disease, relieve pain and promote overall better health and wellness. Some practitioners offer acupuncture for weight loss treatments.
Fasting:
Fasting means that a person stops eating for a certain period of time. Liquids can be taken to quench thirst and the body’s physiological needs. While taking a break from food, the body begins to cleanse itself. During fasting the body removes dead and diseased cells, unwanted fatty tissue and toxins in the blood and organs. When the fast is over, the person will often feel refreshed and revitalized. Fasting is often done with fresh and organic juices prepared with a juicer.
Meditation:
Meditation is a way to calm and focus the mind in order to reach a more peaceful and healthy state. By focusing on “nothing,” the mind is able to clear itself of anxiety and worry and the tension and stress that often accompany them. People who meditate are often able to lower their blood pressure and achieve a more balanced and healthy outlook on life. Meditation is a key building block of biofeedback, which is a way for one’s mind to begin to control the body’s processes. By mastering meditation and biofeedback, a person is able to calm the mind and send healing signals to the brain. The result is better health.
Raw Foods Diet:
Many people believe that a diet of raw and organic fruits and vegetables is a great way to stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanism. The vitamins and minerals contained in raw foods are just what the body needs to rebuild and regenerate its cells, thereby staying young and vigorous. Digestion is also improved by the high fiber content of eating raw foods. There are many benefits to this all-natural approach to better health.
